Unrivalled beauty trend forecasting

As the flagship event for APAC personal care ingredients, trend forecasting and formulation insight, the 2025 show delivered a strong programme of market predictions, technical breakthroughs and ingredient-focussed learning from leading specialists.

Some of the most noteworthy sessions included L’Oréal’s keynote in the Well-Ageing Conference,Skin Longevity – Harnessing Systems Biology for Lifelong Skin Health,’ Guangzhou Reachin Chemical Co. Ltd.’s, ‘The Science Behind Polymer Thickeners for Superior Formulations & Sensory Aesthetics,’ and BEAUTYSTREAMS’ ‘2026 Trends Across Skincare, Haircare, Colour & Wellness.’

Technical and science-led seminars included topics such as the harmonisation of cosmetic preservation and sustainability, scalp-to-skin protection, leveraging AI for cosmetic R&D and post-procedure skincare for optimal skin healing. The programme also featured hands-on formulation lab sessions including: ‘Next-Gen Lightweight Formulation: Calm, Protect and Defend Against UV Rays and Exosomes’ by Gattefossé.

Biotech-driven beauty also dominated the agenda, headlining the Spotlight On Biotech Beauty area with nearly 40 products showcasing the latest breakthrough biotech-driven innovations. The prestigious Spotlight On Formulation Gold Award was presented to Solabia Group for Serenibiome, a double-patented active that repairs skin sensitivity and helps to break the itch-scratch cycle.

Honouring APAC’s success

The in-cosmetics Innovation Zone Best Ingredient Awards celebrated exceptional ingredient innovation against a backdrop of record-breaking entries, featuring 120 brand new ingredients – the highest number to date.

Singapore-based start-up, ArrowBiome was awarded Gold in the Actives category for ArcherZyme, the world’s first clinically validated lysin for body odour control, marking a new frontier in malodour defence. Momentive Performance Materials claimed Gold in the Functionals category for Harmonie NatuVel Gel.

Now in its second year, the 9 Faces of the APAC Beauty Industry Award made an even deeper impact, drawing major attention from beauty giants Shiseido, Proya, The Martha Tilaar Group and Unilever. The award recognises remarkable individuals whose work is transforming the region’s beauty landscape in a meaningful way.

Building on this momentum, in-cosmetics Asia launched Ask the Experts, a free interactive session giving attendees personalised advice from leading personal care specialists on formulation, product development, green chemistry, sustainability, regulations and digital brand promotion.

Sarah Gibson, Event Director of in-cosmetics Asia, said: “This year’s in-cosmetics Asia has been truly momentous, both in its impact on the industry and as a clear marker of its position as the flagship event for the APAC beauty ecosystem. We never rest on our laurels and refresh the show every year to ensure it remains the region’s most dynamic and influential international personal care ingredient event.

“With over 22,000 visits across the three days and a 69% increase in full three-day attendance, the density and engagement at the show were remarkable. The show continues to bridge innovation, technology and marketing in a way that no other event can. We thoroughly enjoyed welcoming such a stellar attendance list and we already look ahead to next year – there’s even more new show initiatives to come.”

The winners of the prestigious in-cosmetics Asia 2025 Awards have just been revealed, celebrating the most innovative cosmetic ingredients launched within the last eight months.

A record-breaking 120 entries were submitted this year, recognising the best new Innovation Zone active and functional ingredients, along with the Spotlight On Formulation Awards judged live at the show.

The judging panel included international cosmetic scientists, R&D leaders and product developers from leading brands, including L’Oréal, Estée Lauder, Amorepacific and Paragon Corp. They assessed submissions against criteria of innovation, efficacy, and market relevance.

Celebrating breakthroughs in active ingredients

In the 2025 Actives category, the Gold Award was presented to ArrowBiome Pte. Ltd. for ArcherZyme®, the world’s first clinically validated lysin for body odour control, redefining malodour defence innovation. Clinically proven to deliver rapid, long-lasting freshness at just 0.01%, ArcherZyme® offers a sustainable, cruelty-free, and biodegradable alternative to traditional deodorant actives.

Hallstar received the silver award for UBI Oléoactif®, which supports skin rejuvenation through a novel biological mechanism acting on ubiquitin – a vital cellular protein. Developed from a birchwood co-product and backed by multi-ethnic clinical studies, UBI Oléoactif® represents the first cosmetic active to target ubiquitin for visible improvements in skin vitality and tone.

Lucas Meyer Cosmetics by Clariant were recognised with a bronze award for GlowCytocin™, which activates oxytocin receptors in the skin, the so-called “love hormone” pathway, to evoke a natural, radiant glow. Powered by 1-Deoxynojirimycin (DNJ), a neuroprotective compound from Hyacinth bulbs, GlowCytocin™ brings a patented, neurocosmetic approach that connects emotional pleasure with visible beauty benefits.

Innovation in functional ingredients

In the 2025 Functional Category, Gold was granted to MOMENTIVE PERFORMANCE MATERIALS for their Harmonie NatuVel gel. This 100% natural-origin gel network offers formulators a new generation of sensory performance, providing a soft-focus, mattifying effect with a light, cushioned feel. Designed for skincare and colour cosmetics, it enables fully natural formulations without sacrificing performance or luxury texture.

Dow earned the Silver Award for their DEXCARE™ CD-2 Polymer ingredient, which redefines sustainable haircare with a biofermented dextran backbone derived from non-GMO sugarcane. This biodegradable polymer enhances deposition, boosts foaming in sulfate-free systems, and improves wet and dry combing for smoother, more manageable hair.

Bronze was awarded to Hallstar for Olivem® Essenza, a naturally derived O/W emulsifier designed for low-viscosity emulsions with a light, hydrating touch. As a biomimetic liquid crystal maker, it delivers hydration and stability while supporting minimalist, sustainable formulation design.

Spotlight On Formulation Awards

This year’s Spotlight On Formulation Awards showcased the most innovative formulations, celebrating creativity and scientific excellence in cosmetic biotechnology. The Gold Award went to Solabia Group for Serenibiome®, a double-patented active ingredient based that repairs skin sensitivity and helps break the itch-scratch cycle. Evonik (Thailand) Ltd. received Silver for X50 NeoSyno-Col®, a cutting-edge “Cosmetic Drone” designed to boost skin elasticity, firmness and density through targeted dermal delivery. Ichimaru Pharcos Co., Ltd. took Bronze for Rice Bran Ferment, an upcycled beauty ingredient that harnesses unrefined rice bran to gently cleanse and moisturise the skin while improving smoothness and comfort.

The Awards ceremony also celebrated the 9 Faces of the APAC Beauty Industry 2025, supported by Personal Care Magazine, which recognises nine exceptional professionals shaping the region’s personal care sector. This year’s winners include Dr Alain Khaiat of SEERS Consulting, Gaurav Datta of Unilever, Hou Juncheng of Proya Cosmetics, Dr Martha Tilaar of Martha Tilaar Group, and Yoshiaki Okabe of Shiseido, among others.

Sarah Gibson, Event Director of in-cosmetics Asia, said: “This year’s Awards truly reflect the extraordinary pace of innovation shaping the beauty and personal care industry across Asia-Pacific. in-cosmetics Asia, the leading event in Asia Pacific for personal care ingredients organised by RX, has named biotechnology as the focus of its 2025 Spotlight On area. The showcase will feature formulated ingredient prototypes from Thailand, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, China and Malaysia, as well as the United States, Sweden, Spain and Italy.

Sponsored by BASF, the 2025 spotlight reflects the growth and influence of biotechnology in the personal care industry. Valued at USD 2.17 billion in 2023 and projected to reach USD 3.68 billion by 2030[1], the biotech market is gaining popularity as it offers sustainable yet highly effective alternatives to traditional cosmetic ingredients.

The Asia Pacific region is expected to be a key driver of this growth, as scientific innovation and consumer demand for high-performing, natural products continues to grow. in-cosmetics Asia’s Spotlight On Biotech Beauty area will showcase the latest biotech-derived innovations that are transforming the industry.

37 products will feature in the space from companies including Innovacos, Lubrizol Southeast Asia Pte Ltd, The Tiny Cargo Company, WILMAR, Matsumoto Trading Co., Ltd, Davos Life Science Sdn Bhd, Ichimaru Pharcos Co., Ltd, Melt & Marble, IMCD Group and more.

Azelis will debut three of its new products, including 360 Hair Repair & Shield Cream Serum, which harnesses biotech peptides and encapsulated biotin to repair hair, strengthen follicles and protect against external stressors, all with over 96% natural origin ingredients. In line with trending microneedle formats, the Skin Non-jection Renewal Serum offers a needle-free, biotech-powered approach to prejuvenation, made from fermented GABA to visibly smooth lines.

Additionally, Azelis’ SUN-sitive Biome Sun Dew SPF50+ PA++++ combines advanced UV protection with postbiotic, marine and botanical ingredients to calm and repair the skin barrier, whilst delivering high-performing sun care.

BASF will bring a line-up of bio-fermentation innovations including; Yogurt – Do a Favor on Skin SPF50 / PA++++ with Postbiolift®, a lightweight, non-greasy sunscreen with a yogurt-like texture that combines exosome-rich postbiotics and encapsulated Tinosorb® S for enhanced UV protection; Micro Jewel Micro’balance Watery Gel with Relipidium® which restores the skin barrier, balances microbiota and reduces water loss; and Light Touch Protecting Day Care Fluid SPF50 with Hydrasensyl® Glucan Green, a multi-mechanism protective against UVA, UVB and blue light.

dsm-firmenich will bring ‘playful’ science to skincare with MOCHI-MOCHI, a DOPA-inspired innovation powered by REVITALIN® CB, that merges sensorial indulgence with targeted cellular energy. It features a stretchy, mochi-like texture that wraps the skin in a cocoon.

Singapore-based Wilmar will also showcase WILSOL SPF Booster, its 100% plant-based, biodegradable polymer that can boost SPF performance by up to three times. Using patented technology, it enhances UV dispersal in both oil- and water-based systems.

Rahul Kale, Group Head – Wilmar Oleochemicals & Biofuels said: “Formulators today face increasing challenges to deliver superior performance with clean beauty credentials and contain costs. Our focus is to squarely address these challenges with our deep expertise in Natural chemicals based on biotech and thermo chemical processes. Our WILSOL SPF Booster, built on a Nobel Prize-winning technology, enables formulators to achieve triple SPF enhancement with an inherently biodegradable, plant-based ingredient while reducing costs. Our 2024 Silver Award served to highlight this globally and the inclusion in the Spotlight On Beauty Biotech area at in-cosmetics Asia 2025 demonstrates our commitment to practical innovations that solve real formulation challenges.”

Japan’s Matsumoto Trading Co., Ltd will introduce Dewy Enchanting Lip & Cheek, a multifunctional makeup innovation powered by GeoFuse®-moist with a 100% natural origin index (NOI). Malaysia will also step into the biotech spotlight with DavosLife Luscious Lip Jelly from Davos Life Science Sdn Bhd, a pH colour-changing lip care innovation that merges skincare and makeup, unfused with DavosLife E3 Tocotrienols.

ALGAKTIV from Barcelona, Spain, will showcase its new ALGAKTIV® Densidyl, a blue biotechnology-derived active ingredient designed to support hair longevity and scalp health. Using stress-resilient microalgae, it targets the root causes of premature greying and progressive hair loss.

Meanwhile, Lipotrue will present its SE(HA)+™, a biotech-powered hyaluronic acid (HA) alternative, launched this summer, derived from naturally HA-producing bacteria. Combining HA-like and HA-boosting effects, it enhances skin hydration, barrier function and extracellular matrix renewal. From Sweden, Marble7 by Melt&Marble is a precision-fermented butter combining sustainability, bioactivity and multifunctional performance, boasting a clean-label formulation, premium sensory qualities and sustainable biotech origins.

The Spotlight On Biotech Beauty entries, combining science-led excellence with sustainable origins, will be entered into the Spotlight On Formulation Awards.

Sarah Gibson, Event Director of in-cosmetics Asia, said: “The biotech beauty focus of our 2025 Spotlight On area is a step ahead of the market. As regulations tighten around the use of certain ingredients and consumers increasingly demand natural and more sustainable formulations, the market is surging at an unprecedented pace.

“This year’s area will feature those who have elevated biotech-driven innovation into an art form. Globally, we’re seeing the market growing rapidly, but APAC is leading the charge, with Thailand in particular emerging as a hotbed of formulation. With APAC’s leadership in ingredient development and trendsetting, the region is uniquely positioned to drive this movement forward – and there is no better place to experience the latest products first-hand, before they hit the market, than at our Spotlight On Biotech Beauty area.”

in-cosmetics Asia 2025 will take place at the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC), in Bangkok, Thailand from 4-6 November 2025. The event will be co-located with COSMEX, ASEAN’s most comprehensive exhibition on manufacturing technologies, machinery, packaging, and ODM/OEM services for cosmetics and personal care. For more information and to register, visit the in-cosmetics Asia website here.

1 SEPTEMBER, Bangkok: Following its successful 2024 debut, in-cosmetics Asia will present its cosmetic science conference with a new Well-Ageing theme, held in association with the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC) and sponsored by dsm-firmenich.

Taking place on 5 November as part of in-cosmetics Asia (organised by RX), the programme will welcome R&D experts and cosmetic scientists from L’Oréal, Amorepacific, Mageline, RATIONALE, and Winnox Cosmeceutics, who will share high-level insights into the science and innovation driving well-ageing in personal care.

The theme is backed by consumer demand, as nearly half (44%) of respondents to the 2024 APAC Beauty Survey identified ageing, anti-ageing, and pro-ageing as ‘key growth areas’ over the next five years. This is further supported by data from in-cosmetics Asia’s Innovation Zone, where over a third (34.3%) of featured products last year incorporated anti- or well-ageing properties.

Unlocking lifelong health

With skin longevity emerging as a key driver in rethinking ageing and skin health, scientists are uncovering how genomic instability, inflammation, and environmental factors contribute to the ageing process.

In the keynote session ‘Skin Longevity – Harnessing Systems Biology for Lifelong Skin Health,’ Grace Gao, PhD, Head of R&D Asia at L’Oréal, will share how L’Oréal is leveraging systems biology and data-driven research to develop personalised skincare innovations. Gao comes with extensive experience leading pioneering work in microbiome science, longevity, and green transformation.

Resilience and repair

With exposure to sunlight, pollution and toxins an increasing concern for consumers, resilience and repair have become key to skin longevity strategies.

In the session, ‘Enhancing Skin Longevity Through Solar Protective and Repair Skincare,’ Amaryllis Aganahi, Head of Research at RATIONALE, will explore how advanced formulations can help counteract these effects using immune modulators, antioxidants, solar filters, and DNA repair compounds. Aganahi brings 15 years’ expertise in skin biology, genomics and formulation.

Ancient rituals, modern science

Long valued in Asian beauty rituals for its natural brightening and soothing properties, rice water is trending in modern skincare, gaining popularity for its calming benefits and traditional roots.

Yang Fan, CTO of Mageline and IFSCC Social Media Coordinator, will speak on: ‘Rice ferment filtrate uncovered: Transforming ancient beauty rituals into modern skincare solutions,’ exploring how RFF merges traditional wisdom with microbiome-targeted, high-performance skincare backed by science. Fan specialises in prestige skincare formulation with 20 years’ experience in product innovation, including leading the global launch of SK-II.

Additionally, with modern science revealing ginseng’s age-reversing properties, the session, ‘The ginseng beauty science of Sulwhasoo,’ will be led by Jean Choi, Director of Amorepacific’s APAC R&I Centre, who offers 15 years’ experience in skincare innovation, luxury formulations and plant-based science.

Cracking the code on ageing skin

Research reveals that damage to the dermal-epidermal junction can lead to pigment leakage and retention; key factors in early-onset hyperpigmentation and a common ageing concern among Chinese and Malaysian consumers.

Toh Mong Sah, R&D Director at Winnox Cosmeceutics, will present, ‘A new anti-ageing breakthrough: Clinical and biological insights in Asian skin.’ Mong Sah leads over 100 scientists across Asia and spearheads innovative cosmetic science, integrating advanced research with commercial strategy.

Asia-specific solutions

Closing the day’s conference, a panel discussion, ‘Innovating Anti-Ageing Skincare for Asia: From R&D to Market,’ will explore how research tackles region-specific concerns like pigmentation, dehydration, and elasticity loss. The session, chaired by Robert McPherson, Vice President of the IFSCC, will demonstrate how science, consumer trends, and regulatory alignment drive tailored innovations from lab to market.

Sarah Gibson, Event Director at in-cosmetics Asia, said: “It is known that well-ageing is gaining traction as a beauty trend; not just due to ageing populations across APAC, but also due to consumers becoming increasingly more mindful and skin health-focussed. This year’s conference will provide new, in-depth insights into well-ageing, including the cosmetic science, technology, and traditional natural ingredients shaping it. It is an opportunity for the industry to hear and learn about these important elements straight from some of the world’s leading experts themselves.”

The Well-Ageing Conference, in association with the IFSCC and sponsored by dsm-firmenich, will take place from 11:00 to 17:00 on 5 November at in-cosmetics Asia. Tickets to the conference are priced at $110 per visitor. For more information and to register to attend, visit the website here. in-cosmetics Asia will take place from 4-6 November 2025 at BITEC, Bangkok. It will be co-located with COSMEX, ASEAN’s leading manufacturing, packaging and OEM/ODM exhibition for personal care and dietary supplement products.

How tradition, innovation, and a skin-deep philosophy are quietly shaping the future of beauty

Beneath every healthy complexion is an entire ecosystem—a city of microscopic organisms that protect, hydrate, and heal the skin.

Across Southeast Asia, where glowing skin is almost cultural currency, the quiet secret may have always been the microbiome. As science begins to catch up with centuries-old traditions, microbiome beauty is becoming less of a trend and more of a movement.

Biology Beneath the Glow

The human skin is our largest organ. It is our first line of defence, our most visible reflection of health, and the body’s constant interface with the outside world.

It also hosts over a trillion microorganisms, known as the skin microbiome—a living barrier that controls our skin’s inflammation, hydration, and immunity.

Skincare dedicated to the human microbiome has one simple goal: to create balance so your skin’s ecosystem can thrive. When this balance is disrupted—by harsh cleansers, overuse of strong acid-based actives (like high-percentage AHAs or BHAs), or environmental stress—our skin reacts: with acne, dryness, redness, or dullness.

In aesthetic terms, a balanced microbiome shows up as calm, happy, radiant skin. It responds with improved texture, reduced sensitivity, and a strong skin barrier—making it more resilient to climate changes and pollution, especially in humid Southeast Asian environments. Today, ingredients like fermented rice water, kombucha extract, and yoghurt enzymes are appearing on product labels—not just for novelty, but because they work.

A Tradition Modernized

Across Southeast Asia, skincare rituals have long reflected a deep-rooted respect for balance and nourishment.

From herbal infusions to fermented ingredients, these practices have quietly supported the skin’s barrier for generations, long before the term “microbiome” became popular.

In Thailand, fermented rice water has been a part of women’s hair and skin rituals for generations. In Indonesia, jamu—a blend of herbal roots and fermented botanicals—has been consumed and applied to support gut and skin health. And in India, which shares centuries of overlapping rituals, modern skincare is revisiting ingredients like neem, turmeric, and sandalwood for their microbiome-boosting potential.

What’s changing now is how these traditions are being validated and refined. What was once seen as the start of a beauty journey is now being seen as the explanation of its success. It’s almost a living oxymoron: is what once felt anecdotal, now finally becoming measurable?

Why ‘Quiet’? A Cultural Insight

Unlike the West, where trends often dominate through viral campaigns, Southeast Asia’s relationship with wellness is more inward and generational. Consumers are less focused on instant results and more connected to daily rituals and intuitive direction.

Beauty here isn’t performed, it’s practiced. From oil massages to herbal steaming, these rituals speak directly to skin health, even before people understood why. Now, as skin conditions and over-treatment rise globally, the microbiome is emerging as the quiet explanation behind centuries of wisdom. Wellness-driven habits that once ‘just felt right’ are now being reverse-engineered—and finally make sense through the lens of modern science.

Global Interest, Local Intelligence

While Southeast Asian brands are taking a culturally sensitive approach, global conglomerates are taking notice.

In 2023, L’Oréal opened its first microbiome research centre dedicated solely to skin flora, signalling that the future of skincare is no longer just about actives and performance, but about harmony and repair. This centre allows them to tailor solutions with more precision for sensitive skin types, climate-specific conditions, and long-term sustainability.

Meanwhile, Asian brands are expanding globally with microbiome at their core.

For example, Shimmied, through its WASO line, has integrated fermented ingredients and probiotic technology into global launches, adapting Japan’s inward beauty rituals for international audiences.

The microbiome skincare market is projected to reach $2.97 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 8.2%. What’s so interesting—and so unexpected—is that this time, a global trend is giving local brands an advantage. With access to native botanicals and a generational understanding of slow beauty, brands across Southeast Asia are uniquely positioned to lead the category—not just follow it.

In Southeast Asia, the shift toward microbiome-focused beauty has not arrived with loud claims or disruptive packaging. It has arrived quietly — through fermented rituals, ancestral knowledge, and modern formulations that honor the skin’s natural intelligence.

This is not a trend. This is a return.

Potion’s Belief in Barrier-First Beauty

At Potion, we believe in formulating not just with function, but with integrity. Every product in our routine, our cleanser, serum, and sunscreen—are pH-formulated at 5.5 and designed to be microbiome-adapted from the start. We use active ingredients that don’t strip the skin’s natural defence, but rather reinforce it. Lactic acid, hibiscus extract, and aloe vera in our Come Alive probiotic serum help hydrate and calm the skin, while tea tree, salicylic acid, and glycerin in our cleanser purify the skin surface without stripping. Our brand philosophy ensures that the skin stays hydrated, supported, and strengthened over time—without ever disturbing its ecological harmony. It’s how we think about skincare from the inside out.
